| | - The International Legal Metrology Organisation has defined the division of weights into accuracy classes in relation to the error of the masses themselves.
- If a weighing instrument is to be set up and checked for calibration, it is necessary to have weights whose error is less than 1/3 of the division of the instrument under consideration.
- In a simplified way the weight classes can be classified as follows:
- M2: for checking scales up to 5,000 divisions (III)
- M1: for checking scales up to 10,000 divisions (III)
- F2: for checking scales up to 30,000 divisions (II)
- F1: for checking scales up to 100,000 divisions (II)
- E2: for checking scales up to 500,000 divisions (I)
- E1: for checking special scales with more than 500,000 divisions.

NOTE: (*) Volume determination is a necessary operation for the calibration of class E1 masses from 1g. This operation is only necessary during the first calibration (see OIML R 111-1:2004 § 15.2.2.1).
